Guaiacol
What is Guaiacol ?
Guaiacin is a naturally occurring organic compound, chemically known as o-methoxphenol, initially isolated from guaiac resin. Its molecular structure consists of a benzene ring, hydroxyl groups, and a methox group; this unique combination gives it both the antibacterial properties of phenols and the volatility of ethes. Modern industrial production primarily involves synthesis through lignin hydrolysis or catechol methylation. The finished product is a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid with a distinctive smoky aroma and pungent taste. As an important fine chemical intermediate, it holds an irreplaceable position in the pharmaceutical, food, and fragrance industries.
Feature
Expectorant Effect: By stimulating the vagus nerve endings in the gastric mucosa, it reflexively promotes the secretion of bronchial glands, diluting sputum to one-third of its original viscosity. Clinical data show that oral administration of 200mg guaiacol glycerol ethe increases sputum volume in patients with chronic bronchitis by 2.8 times.
Antibacterial and Antiseptic Effects: Its phenolic hydroxyl groups can disrupt the permeability of microbial cell membranes, exhibiting an inhibition rate of up to 99.2% against Gram-positive bacteria. At pH 5.5, a concentration of 0.5% can completely inhibit the growth of Aspergillus niger hyphae.
Antioxidant Synergistic Effects: As a hydrogen donor, it blocks the lipid peroxidation chain reaction. When used in combination with BHT, it can extend the shelf life of edible oils by 3 times and reduce the peroxide value by 67%.
